We could not have scripted it better and for this we have truly been blessed by God. Our birth plan was to deliver without any intervention or medication. This was the blessing we were graced with.
Starting around 1:30 AM, it turned into a whirlwind of activity before too long. Through all the classes, Emily and I had it in our head that it would be a very slow process as we progressed through the early stages of labor. We planned to watch Friends episodes to pass the time. However, Emily experienced all of her contractions in her back, which threw us off. Through those first two hours we kept thinking, "Is this it?" The contractions were painful and close together, but we had not seemly been in labor long enough. We never made it through half and episode of Friends, and we have Tivo. We simply could not connect the dots. So we called our doula, Guina Bixler, at 4 AM, which we were trying to delay until a reasonable hour. Emily showered and primped between the painful, yet questionable, contractions while we waited for Guina to get to our condo.
After Guina's arrival we explained the situation. A few 'verified' contractions later she said she thought it was time to call the doctor. Emily and I looked at each other like how could this be true, it has not been long enough, but the contractions were certainly painful and close. I call the midwife at 5:30 AM, who told us that she would meet us at the hospital in 15 minutes.
Arriving at the nurses station to check in, the nurses asked us to fill out paperwork. Emily went into a contraction and the nurses said never mind to the paperwork, we have a room right here for you. The midwife walked in a few moments later and notified us that Emily was fully dilated and ready to start pushing. The nursing staff didn't even bother with doing bloodwork or putting in an IV since she was so far progressed. After an hour of pushing, sweet Caroline arrived at 8:27 AM.
